Family visas 

A grant of a family visa will mean you must meet the following requirements. 

  • You and your partner both must be 18 or over. 
  • Your partner must either be a British citizen or settled in the UK. 
  • Your relationship must be genuine and subsisting, and you intend to live permanently with your partner in the UK. 
  • You must have adequate accommodation and finances without recourse to public fund,  and in most cases your sponsor must meet the financial requirement of a gross income of at least £18,600 per year.
  • The financial requirement lncreases if you have children and sufficient savings can be counted towards the financial requiremen.
  • You must meet the English language requirement at the required level.

You are required to complete an online application form and provide specified documents. The family visa requires a substantial number of documents and proof your relationship is genuine and subsisting. The requirements and application process vary for different family visa routes. Indefinite leave to remain

Individuals who have held a UK visa for 5 years or more are eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain. This grant of leave enables you to stay in the UK without restrictions. You need to meet the following to apply. 
 

  • You have held the same type of UK visa for 5 years or more.
  • You have passed the English language test and Life in the UK test. 
  • You do not have any serious or recent criminal record, or adverse immigration history. 
  • You must have not spent more than 180 days outside the UK within any year of your UK residence. 

Most other visa routes are eligible to apply for ILR, including those on Tier 1and Tier 2 Work Visas, including Family Visas.

Naturalisation 

You are eligible to apply to naturalise as a British citizen if meet the following requirements.  
 

  • You are 18 or over and you are of good character i.e. - you do not have any serious or recent criminal record, or adverse immigration history.
    You are of sound mind and intend to make the UK your permanent home. 
  • You meet the English requirement and have passed the Life in the UK test. 
  • You have lived in the UK for at least 5 years prior to your application and have not spent more than 450 days outside the UK in those 5 years, and have not spent more than 90 days outside the UK in the last 12 months. 
  • You must have held indefinite leave to remain or settled status for the last 12 months
